Happy First Day of Spring!

Spring is my favorite time of year, it’s not hot (yet), things start to green up,  and it’s time to plant those colorful flowers!  I enjoy working in the yard this time of year getting my flower beds ready and pretty.  Some of what I have accomplished so far:

Mulching in the front beds are done!  I love mixing colors, gives my beds depth and dimension (Oh Lord, I have been watching too much HGTV!).

The “trough bed” is new this year.  I keep telling myself don’t do anything new (I even ignore me)!  Planted are potato vine, pot mums, moss rose and in the back I found Espresso Gladiolus bulbs and planted those.  The cattle panel will support them when they come up.  Can’t wait to see these!

Some mulching in the back is done (I need more to finish!).

One of my favorites is Amaryllis.  Only have one blooming at the moment.

Happy Spring!

Hello Spring!

The weather here the past few days has been stunning and I have been working out in the yard weeding flower beds that look like the jungle!  Still have a little weeding to go, but today, hubby and I went and bought stuff to plant.  First stop was in Independence at the Antique Rose Emporium.  The landscaping there is beautiful.  They are known for their different variety of roses, but you can get other plants as well.  We bought another Popcorn Drift (to replace one that died last year) and a new color – The Sweet Drift.  They are in the ground and I am ready for color!

The Sweet Drift, which according to the picture looks like a pretty pink shade of lipstick!

Then we headed to Brenham to see what else we could find.  My go-to store there is normally Home Depot, but this time they didn’t have anything I had to have.  Next stop – Lowe’s and that is where I went nuts!  I got two deep red Geraniums, various yellow Marigolds, various colors of Dyanthus, Purple Fountain Grass and A Pink Lantana which I have never seen this color before.

I still have mulching to do, but I ran out of steam.  My reward today was this beer we bought for the first time.  It is pretty tasty!

Happy Fall Y’all!

I was walking down to the mail box and stopped in my tracks – the Schoolhouse/Oxblood lillies are blooming!  I ran back to the house to get my camera.  I watered the BedBed the other day so I am sure that helped them to bloom.  These are my absolute favorite fall flower and are extremely hard to find.  If I do find more I will buy the store out!

I also love the contrast in color in the flower bed at the front gate.  The Coral Drift Rose is blooming nicely and so are the Dyanthus that I planted last year.  I love the deep red color of the Dyanthus.

Had an idea to decorate in the front yard and it started with two bales of hay and mums.  I stacked the bales of hay and then decided to carve out a place to put the mums.  That was a LOT harder than I thought it was, but I finally got it accomplished.  I  put the discarded hay in the wheel barrow and was just about to get rid of it and had another idea.  I needed some pumpkins, so my awesome husband and sis-in-law got some for me – they are perfect!  Then I wanted a sign so Greg made the sign for me and I hand painted the lettering.  The first try I did not like, so I painted over it and started over again.  I combined some paint colors and am happy with how it turned out.  Then, Greg bought this HUGE mum for me and I replanted it in a pot I had lying around.  After I got done painting, I was mixing all the colors together (red, green, yellow and bronze) and liked what I saw, so I painted the flower pot too.  I am very pleased with this (and the pups haven’t even tried to eat the pumpkins!).

And, I am Done!

I finally got all the Spring flowers planted and the mulch put down in the flower beds.  YAY!  Now I can enjoy the fruits of my labor (until weeding time again!).

I love Dianthus in the flower beds.  I found a different color the other day and bought two and planted by the garage where I have purple/yellow violas and my peach Drift Rose.  Also bought some fuschia and white/pink ones.

Happy First Day of Spring!

I do believe that Spring is my favorite time of year, the weather is not too hot yet and the wild flowers are gorgeous.  It has been warm here lately, have had the windows open and wearing shorts and flip flops!  A few years ago, we (or rather Greg) dug up some wild lillies that were on the side of our road and transplanted them.  The “trellis” is for the wild Passion Vine that will come up later.

I transplanted these bulbs from my dad’s a few years ago after he passed away and I am not sure of the name of them.  They look like tiny bells!

Planted some flowers and shrubs we bought this past weekend, Marigolds and Mexican Feather Grass.  The Pansies are from the Fall and will be going away soon as they don’t like hot weather.

And I could not have gotten a better picture of the “kiddos”.  Getting animals to pose is like asking a 2 year old to sit still!  Say cheese!!

I’m Ready to Plant!

After church this morning, we went by Lowe’s and picked up some shrubs/plants to put in flower beds.  I had transplanted some Nandina this Spring, but some didn’t make it so am replacing with two that are dwarf sized and have bright red leaves and one that is taller, but has green leaves.  I think that will be a nice contrast.  Also bought 5 mums (red, yellow and white), and a new variety of Crepe Myrtle – Black Diamond.  The foliage on these are “black” instead of the green.  I got the Blush variety, but they come in different colors (see website here).  Our Lowe’s only had the Blush and Red Hot varieties.

Happy Spring!

We bought some flowers last week so today, I got them planted – on the first day eve of of Spring!  Last week, I pulled up some Nandina that was being hidden by other shrubs and decided to transplant them where we dug up the Junipers that had died.  These will get lots more sunlight.  I also dug up some Nandina from our back flower bed too as they weren’t getting a lot of sun.  So, they should be happy.  Today I planted some purple Petunias (I always get petunias and pansies mixed up on which season they get planted), Diamond Frost (never had those and thought they were pretty in the store), Dianthus, a Carolina Jasmine and yellow/orange Lantana. Now all I have to do is put down the mulch.

While I was walking back to my wheelbarrow, I noticed Roscoe playing with something.  I thought it was one of Greg’s charcoal briquettes until I got closer.  Somehow he caught a black bird!  They have invaded my bird feeder this season causing me to fill up the feeder more than normal.  That will be one less bird to eat seed!  About a week or so ago, we bought 200 pounds of bird seed (yes, I wrote that right 200 pounds!).  We go through a lot of bird seed but I love to watch them as they eat!
